How Does A Red Dot Sight Work

This micro size red laser is pretty good for the size and price -- both of which limit what any manufacturer could accomplish. It is NOT the best laser sight on the market -- it's not even the best laser sight on eBay -- but for the size and the price, it is hard to beat. This is NOT a long distance laser sight and isn't really useful in bright daylight. BUT indoors or in low light, at the distances reasonable for a gun small enough to need a micro size laser, this will work well enough. The power is listed as 'less than 5mW' (which is the legal limit for an eye safe laser in most countries). I don't have instruments to measure the actual power, but I'd say it is almost certainly well under 1mW. The manufacturer has to hold down the power both to prevent overheating and to keep it from draining the tiny batteries too fast.Better engineering could produce a brighter laser this size -- but probably at a cost at least ten times the price of this micro laser. You can buy better micro lasers from several name brand US companies, but those lasers start at more than ten times this price. If you have a gun where a larger laser would fit, get a larger laser - it will be brighter and will last longer. This micro size laser is meant for use on SMALL pistols (yes, they do show one picture of it mounted on a rifle, and yes you CAN mount it on a rifle or a full size pistol, but you won't be happy with the results). This laser runs on three tiny AG3 batteries. All three batteries stacked together are smaller than a pencil eraser. When your laser arrives and you try to install the batteries, be sure to work somewhere that you won't lose a battery when you drop one -- and you WILL drop at least one at least once. The best way I found to install the batteries is to stack the three batteries on top of each other (all + side down) on a piece of cardstock or heavy paper. Then put the laser down onto the stack and use the cardstock to hold the batteries in place while you turn the laser over to screw in the battery cover. If you try to just drop each battery into position, they will turn over sideways or upside-down.After installing the batteries you can install the laser on your gun. Of course everyone knows to be sure the gun in unloaded first but check it again to be sure. Loosen the mounting screw, position the laser on the rail, then tighten the mounting screw. The next thing you need to do is to align the laser with your pistol sights, because it will probably be way off to start with. Use the smallest allen wrench that comes with the laser to adjust the position of the laser beam. The vertical (elevation) adjustment is through the small 'empty' hole in the rail section on the bottom of the laser. The horizontal (windage) adjustment is the small hole on the right side of the laser. Adjust them about a half-turn at a time until the laser matches the sights on your pistol. The one thing I don't like on this laser is the position of the switch. With the laser installed on a pistol, the switch will be on your left. This is great if you are left-handed because the switch will be in easy reach of your trigger finger. But if you are right-handed you will need to activate the laser with your left hand. Even if you are shooting with a two-hand grip, you probably still cannot reach the switch without breaking your grip. Considering the kind of pistols this laser is meant for and how those pistols are used, this seems to be a serious flaw. You CANNOT draw your pistol and activate the laser all in one motion.
