When searching all military records from this page, you can narrow your search by entering a median year for the conflict in the field for Military Service, and select +/- 1, 2, 5, or 10 years to expand the range. For example, if you’re looking for a Civil War veteran, try the year 1863 and select a range of +/- 2 years to search 1861-1865. Project officially launched! While most of our holdings are not online, a variety of military records, from photos to documents to searchable databases are available. Listed below are online collections of specific interest to veterans, their families and researchers. Additional online records may be found by searching the National Archives Catalog and Access to Archival Databases (AAD) systems.

  • Military records provide important information for family historians. The records for both World War I and World War II, however, present unique challenges. Simply having the name of the veteran will often not be enough to begin a search.
  • Army Serial Numbers – WWII Army Dog Tag Numbers. Warrant Officers (1942): start with prefix W, followed or not by hyphen + series of 7 digits, starting with 21 such as W 2101199, W-2118310, W-2129700, W 2125908, W 2133860 (while most ID Tags start with first digits 21, other show different numbers, such as W-92186, W 901800.
  • Reverse phone number search compiles hundreds of millions of phone book records to help locate the owner's name, location, time zone, email and other public information.
